The North
Carolina Zoo’s UNITE conservation education and teacher training program
in Uganda has been operating in the villages around Kibale National
Park for ten years. Home to East Africa's largest chimpanzee population
and the region's highest density of primates, Kibale is under great
pressure from substantial human encroachment.
UNITE promotes conservation in wild areas in and around the national park by teaching environmentally-sound attitudes, knowledge and skills to the people living in the area. UNITE provides teachers with the tools and resources they need to effectively teach about wildlife and resource conservation. UNITE maintains a full-time educator in Uganda who works with over 100 teachers in 10 local schools to help them improve their teaching skills, develop engaging lessons and incorporate conservation and ecology into their daily classes.
